Saturday Hulky Gears

Saturday Hulky Gears

Workout Date:

Group Led

Skimmer (Respect), Backdraft, Texas Ranger (YHC)

The Thang:

AO: Salty/Hulky Gears

Conditions: 75 and humid

Well the call for riders was put out by Backdraft yesterday on Slack. YHC inquired about the time since I was on a tight schedule due to the M having to be at work early. Wheels up at 0515, okay I can deal with that.

Where would we be launching from?? Market Common was the usual place for a Saturday, but since I was on a tight schedule the group agreed that we could launch from the Hulk! Awesome for me, so I HC’d immediately.

What YHC should’ve done immediately after that was get in the garage and get all his bike gear together… “Nah I’ll have enough time in the morning”. Wrong. I haven’t been out on the bike with the group in probably 2 months, and have maybe touched the bike once in that time, so needless to say that I grossly miscalculated the time I would need to get up and going.

I only live about 1.5miles away from the Hulk and by the time I was ready to go I glanced down at the watch and it’s 0515 already! Every time I thought I was ready, I would remember something that I forgot to grab earlier (my watch, lights, water bottle, etc). Not the best start to the day. Finally ready to depart my house, I have to book it if I’m going to be able to catch up to the group because surely they have left by now. I turn onto River Oaks and start pedaling as fast as I can go. Hit the frontage the road and tried to go faster, eventually topping out at 21/22 mph. I make it to the Hulk parking lot and to my surprise Backdraft and Skimmer are still there!

We waited for another minute or two to see if any other Pax would join us as the guys ribbed me about the roadie setup (pretty much everyone runs a mountain/trail bike except for me). With no more pax we decided to head off.

The Thang: Just Ride

Since I was on a time crunch, Skimmer knew a great route that should get me back in time so we headed off towards the bridge.

For those that haven’t ridden with the Salty Gears crew, I really recommend it. It’s a great time for fellowship and it’s a great way to get a good active recovery workout. After my run with the Hulkamania group yesterday it was just what my legs needed today.

I won’t bore you will all the details of the ride, but you can see it here:

Come check it out!
